REUNIFICATION / FAMILY INTERVENTION THERAPY

Reunification Therapy

As a licensed psychotherapist, I have served as a Reunification Therapist or Family Intervention Therapist in many court-ordered cases over the past 12+ years. Some cases are the result of parent-child estrangement due to the pace and process of family law litigation, or from breaks in parent-child contact for various reasons. In worse cases, deliberate parental alienation takes place in high conflict divorce cases as parents engage in vicious gladiator-style litigation. Unfortunately, children caught in the middle of such battles are often damaged, manipulated and used to accomplish a parent's own goals.

Over time, false accusations of abuse may take on a life of authenticity as a particular narrative is repeated and reinforced by an alienating parent. Alliances are often formed between younger children and an alienating parent because they do not have the facts or the maturity to analyze information fully or accurately. This frequently leads to a need at some point in the family law process for Court-ordered intervention and reunification therapy between the alienated parent and the child(ren) allied with the alienating parent.

Specialized training and understanding is required to gently pry an alienated child away from an allied parent, overcome the "resist-refuse" dynamics a child may be exhibiting, and assist in the rebuilding of a relationship with an alienated parent. As an adult child of high-conflict parents, I understand how alliances can form and shift over time, and how this can impact a child. I am committed to assisting the Court and alienated parents in the reunification process whenever such therapy is needed.
